The concept of Chef to Be originated from the Syndicate team’s desire to give back to the community and support the next generation of hospitality leaders emerging from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT). Through a unique cooking competition format, Chef to Be pairs students from SAIT’s Culinary School with leading chefs from Calgary’s finest restaurants to hone their craft under the type of exacting conditions they can expect to encounter once they graduate.

Shaping the future of Calgary’s food scene.

The team at Syndicate was responsible for providing event management, marketing, web design, promotion, and stakeholder engagement to launch an inclusive competition event that could be sustained. Now in its third year, Chef to Be has provided educational grants to 15 students, helping them pay tuition while providing them with an unforgettable experience and networking opportunity at the outset of their budding careers. As a testament to the platform created by Chef to Be, several students have gone on to apprentice at the restaurants they were paired within the competition, and through continued engagement with Calgary’s restaurant and hospitality sector Syndicate looks forward to expanding the program in the future.
